This lecture presents the findings of a doctoral research project examining the needs of heterosexual men who experience intimate partner violence, from both their own perspectives and those of professionals likely to intervene with them. More specifically, the presentation seeks to delineate the phenomenon, discuss the identification of male victims, and explore men’s self-identification as victims of intimate partner violence. The lecture also examines men’s responses to the violence they experience in order to analyze the challenges that male victimization poses for research, psycho-social and judicial intervention, and public policy.

Éric Couto has expertise in interventions with male populations, particularly in the area of intimate partner violence. He is the Director of the Centre de ressources pour hommes de Montréal, where he oversees a specialized team providing intake and support services for men. He is also actively involved in developing research and intervention partnerships.
