Credibility, Deception, and Nonverbal Behavior

This training will be led by Professor Vincent Denault and will take place on Friday, October 16, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., in room 6420, at 3744 Jean-Brillant Street, Université de Montréal.

Summary:

Lying is an integral part of everyday life. While its consequences are sometimes limited, they can be significant in certain contexts, particularly when individuals in positions of authority make decisions based on others’ statements. Popular videos garnering thousands of views on social media often suggest that liars can be detected at a glance. However, decades of scientific research have demonstrated that the issue is far more complex, and that no single cue—akin to Pinocchio’s nose—reliably reveals deception.

In this training, participants will be introduced to the scientific literature on deception detection and credibility assessment, with a particular emphasis on the challenges associated with nonverbal behavior, which can play a decisive role in professional decision-making processes. The scope and implications of research in this field will be presented in order to derive practical and applicable insights for professionals concerned with the pursuit of truth.
