It is estimated that nearly 8 million people in Canada are victims of crime each year, yet most of these incidents are never reported to the police.
Victimology examines the causes and consequences of victimization for individuals, communities, and society as a whole. Drawing on the latest research, victimologist Jo-Anne M. Wemmers provides a critical yet accessible overview of the field. This new edition incorporates legislative and statistical updates, as well as new conceptual frameworks such as intersectionality, trauma-informed law, and transformative justice.
The second edition of Victimology takes a victim-centred approach to a system in which victims are often overlooked and have limited legal rights. The book emphasizes the importance of a form of justice that goes beyond the criminal prosecution of offenders. It also examines the structural factors that contribute to victimization and advocates for accessible and appropriate services for victims, provided by both social service organizations and government agencies. Each chapter includes discussion and reflection questions designed to deepen understanding and engagement.
An essential resource for victimology courses offered in criminology, social work, and sociology departments across Canada, Victimology focuses on Canadian law and policy while maintaining a global perspective.
